Successful applicants will demonstrate a commitment to:

  • Teamwork. Teamwork is the core of trail work. Crews must work together to overcome challenges in the field as assistance is not always readily available.

  • Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. Crew members are expected to maintain a welcoming and inclusive work environment and be open to learning about others’ identities and backgrounds.

  • Effective communication. Working on trail projects requires crew members to be in frequent communication with each other including candid conversations regarding problem-solving, conflict resolution, and safety.

  • Safety. Working with tools and heavy machinery in an outdoor environment has inherent risk, and it is everyone’s responsibility to contribute to a culture of safety.

  • Stress Management. It is important for crew members to have techniques for managing stress in fast-paced and potentially dangerous situations as well as during monotonous, laborious tasks.

  • Respect for the Indigenous land on which we work. The landscape of the Willamette National Forest includes the traditional homelands of the Kalapuya, Yoncalla, Molalla, Cayuse, Umatilla, and Walla Walla, among many others. These Indigenous peoples are now part of three federally recognized tribes: The Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde, The Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians, and The Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, We need to understand how our actions and attitudes impact the land and community so that we can help steward the trails in the Middlefork Ranger District of the Willamette National Forest.

  • We strongly encourage applications from BIPOC, LGBTQ2S+, women, and others with underrepresented identities in trail building and maintenance.
